Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS CHIROPODY?

Chiropody is the assessment of the foot and the treatment and prevention of diseases, disorders, and dysfunctions of the foot by therapeutic, orthotic, or palliative means. Chiropodists are foot care specialists who are regulated by the College of Chiropodists of Ontario in order to maintain set standards of practice and to protect the public.

Chiropodists are primary health care practitioners who are required to complete a four-year Bachelor of Science degree, followed by a government recognized three-year chiropody program, and lastly, successful completion of a registration exam in order to attain the chiropodist designation.

Chiropodists can assess, manage, and treat a wide array of foot concerns, including, but not limited to: nail disorders (ingrown nails, fungal nails, thickened nails), skin disorders (calluses, corns, warts, cracked heels), sports injuries (sprained ankles, turf toe), diabetic foot conditions and wound care. Chiropodists use a variety of tools to manage and treat conditions of the feet and ankle including routine nail and skin care, minor surgical procedures, stretching and strengthening, footwear, and custom-made orthotics.

IS THIS SERVICE COVERED BY OHIP?

Chiropody is not currently covered by OHIP but is typically covered by most private and employer sponsored insurance plans. If you are concerned about coverage, please check with your insurance provider prior to your appointment.

Please be advised that we do not offer direct billing and all coverage concerns are the patient's responsibility. If you are struggling with claim submissions or need a pre-approval, please let us know and we will be happy to help.

DO I NEED A REFERRAL TO SEE THE CHIROPODIST?

A referral is not required in order to visit our chiropodist. As primary health care practitioners, chiropody assessments, treatments, and prescriptions can be provided without the prior referral of a medical doctor. Please note that a small number of insurance plans may require a physicians referral in order to be eligible for coverage. If you are uncertain, please contact your insurance provider for confirmation before booking an appointment.

DO YOU OFFER DIRECT BILLING?

Direct billing is not currently offered and full payment is expected at the time of service. We accept cash, VISA, Mastercard, and Interac.

Payment plans can be arranged for larger bills and will be considered on a case by case basis.

Please note that there are no refunds for services rendered or custom medical devices. If you are having fit issues with your custom medical device, please do not hesitate to reach out and we will happily work with you to make them work.

DO I NEED AN APPOINTMENT?

Due to the occasionally complicated nature of medical foot concerns, we only accept patients by appointment and cannot guarantee that we will be able to see you as a walk-in or short notice booking.

Please check online to see our availability and book an appointment.

HOW DO YOU DISINFECT YOUR TOOLS?

Cleanliness and sterility of all tools and equipment are of the utmost important to us at East Toronto Foot Care. We strictly adhere to the standards of practice for cleaning and sterilizing our treatment implements as set out by the guidelines in the Chiropody Act.

After use, all metal tools are scrubbed of any visible debris, placed in an ultrasonic cleanser to remove any remaining debris, dried and sealed in a sterilization pouch. The tools within the pouches are then placed in our medical autoclave, a machine used in hospitals to sterilize metal medical instruments through high heat and pressure. The process is rigorously tested through three separate testing mechanisms to ensure that the tools are being properly sterilized.

Single use tools such as scalpel blades and non-metal abrasive files are disposed of after use and never re-used on subsequent patients.

All surfaces, such as treatment tables and chairs are cleaned with medical-grade disinfectant before any treatment is carried out.

If you have any concerns or questions about our cleaning and sterilization protocols, please feel free to ask!

IS PARKING AVAILABLE?

Green P street parking is available along Carlaw Street (be careful of street parking restrictions during commuter hours) as well as at the paid lot beside the Crow's Theatre on the north-east corner of Dundas and Carlaw, just a 2 minute walk from the clinic. You can also try your luck at the multiple residential streets around the neighbourhood. Alternatively, the clinic can also be easily reached by the 501 Queen streetcar, the 505 Dundas streetcar, or the 75 Pape bus.

HOW MUCH DO VISITS COST?

The costs of visits are based on the service and treatment interventions.

A breakdown of the costs can be found on our Jane booking page here. Additional charges for treatments, services, and products will be discussed and consented to before any services or treatments are performed or products dispensed.

We aim to ensure that you will not be surprised by your bill. If you have any questions about pricing or our pricing policies, please feel free to ask us for clarification.
